Why this site exists

I started writing this site because I kept getting the same question from friends, family, and people who heard I'd done my GIA Diamonds Graduate qualification: where should I actually buy a diamond in South Africa?

The honest answer is layered and depends on what you're buying, what you can spend, and how much patience you have for the process. Most of the answers online are written by jewellers about themselves, by chains promoting their own brands, or by international sites that don't really know the SA market. So I started writing up what I've actually found, visiting showrooms in Sandton, Bedfordview, Hyde Park, and the Cape Town V&A Waterfront, talking to cutters, comparing GIA-certified stones across suppliers at the same spec, and reading the Rapaport list once a week to track what wholesale really looks like.

Everything on this site reflects my personal opinions based on that research. I name names. I rank things. I tell you who I'd send a friend to first. But these are my opinions, not the only opinions. I really do recommend visiting two or three suppliers and comparing before you transact. Diamond prices move weekly with the Rapaport list and per-stone with specifications. What I quote here are research-based ranges, not specific quotes for any specific stone.

I am also natural-only in my editorial stance. I do not recommend factory-grown diamonds for serious, heirloom, resale-aware, or upgrade-path purchases. My view is simple: if a buyer is paying serious money for a diamond, the stone should have rarity, provenance, a real secondary market, and a credible trade-in path. Lab-grown can look beautiful, but weak buy-back value and falling replacement cost make it the wrong category for the buyers I write for.

About me, briefly

I'm Sarah-Anne Ndlovu. I hold a Graduate Gemologist (GG) qualification through the GIA Diamonds Graduate programme. I'm based in Johannesburg, mostly. The site is reviewed for technical accuracy by a credentialled gemmologist before publication; everything else (the rankings, the opinions, the should-you-buy-this conclusions) is mine.

I'm not employed by any of the suppliers I write about. The site doesn't run advertising, doesn't take sponsored placements, and doesn't accept commercial consideration in exchange for editorial coverage. It's a personal passion project. Suppliers I've visited and written about

I link directly to each supplier's website where I have a current URL, or where a public industry listing verifies the supplier. These are SA cutting houses (Bedfordview), established natural-diamond retail jewellers, premium SA brands, and national chain jewellers. I don't earn commission from any of them. Visit them yourself, get your own quotes, and decide what fits.

One last thing

The single best piece of advice I can give a SA diamond buyer is this: compare across at least two or three suppliers, verify the GIA cert independently, and never wire-transfer to someone you haven't transacted with on credit card first. Whatever you decide and wherever you buy, those three rules will protect you more than anything else I can write here.
